Wisdom teeth are the last teeth that erupt towards the back of your jaw. Sometimes, due to lack of space, the teeth at the back get stuck inside the bone, either completely or partially, and struggle to come out. These are also known as impacted third molars.
The third molars are more prone to bacterial growth and decay because of the complexity of the impaction. Removal of the wisdom teeth is usually required in one or more of the following situations: when there is swelling and pain in the region, if the teeth are infected, if you are having difficulty opening your mouth, if you have a recurrent ear infection, or sometimes, if you have trouble swallowing food. You may also need to remove the wisdom teeth if the impacted third molars hit the adjacent healthy second molars below the bone level and cause damage to those teeth.
Before finalizing the treatment plan, we take a digital panoramic X-ray to analyze and confirm the position and condition of the impacted teeth. We then have a highly experienced oral surgeon review these X-Rays and consult with you on diagnosis and treatment. Wisdom teeth removal is a safe surgical procedure that may take 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the difficulty level. The area will be numbed with local anesthetic well before performing the procedure. Our surgeon will make sure to treat you with the utmost comfort during the entire process. We also offer nitrous as an option if you are nervous or have dental fear. After removing the wisdom teeth, our surgeon will suture the surgical site for faster healing. You may need to come back to the office after a week for the follow-up and suture removal. You are free to ask questions at any time and we will be happy to help you.
